Is there a perfect way of reviewing things like movies, video games, and books? Probably not. It’s not fair to judge people’s reviews of things free of the full context but we live in a world deprived of attention spans so it’s easy to jump to a score or rating.
To try and make things easy I will use a 5 point scoring system on things. Only using 5 leaves a lot of wiggle room but I want to stick to it and not use partial points. It’s important to frame these 5 points correctly though. If you see something rated a 3 and try to extrapolate that out to a 100 point scale and then apply letter grades as if this is a grade school test, well it’s not going to track 100%.
My score key:
5 – I love this movie. If this were a letter grade it is an A+.
4 – This movie is good. The letter grade on this is something like a mid B to a low A.
3 – This is a movie that exists. This could be as high as a B but also a lot of Cs.
2 – This movie is not good. This is a D. It may get you by but it’s not acceptable in this household mister.
1 – I hate this movie. F, clearly.
I was just on vacation and I kept thinking, I should write about this or I should write about that. I know no one is reading this because, why would you? However, I am going to try to renew efforts to occasionally write about things if for no other reason than that it is a release. Also, I will have documentation on things I can just point people to like, How to Handle Passwords and 2 Factor Auth.
In a word, no.
I’m willing to consider changing my writing style to accommodate people. I know my sentences can go on forever and that my paragraphs do to. I know that not everyone appreciates a diverse vocabulary. However, I will not be writing anything on a 3rd grade reading level so long as I can help it. If anything this just challenges me to up my writing because it looks like I am writing at a 9th grade reading level.
In my last post (first post) I talked about putting this site up and had not really done anything. Since then I took a little bit of time to start customizing but it’s not finished. Don’t judge me. Yes I need a logo. Yes the header image is a poor cropping (the theme cropped it not me) of a creative commons Horse Head Nebula image. Time is not something I have a lot of but I am moving stuff around and getting a little better look. Additionally, I snagged a few WordPress plugins to try to improve the functionality. SEO. Security. You know the type.
Why are you on this site?
I have owned this domain for a couple of years and I have gone through some changes here and there. It started as a WordPress installation on a crummy host (who I will not name) using scripts and cPanel to get rolling. I have moved the domain to point at Tumblr but felt the need to undo that sometime ago. When I tried to start fresh with WordPress with that same host (after all the account is still active), I ran into issues with the scripts. Couple the problems with the script, the lack of good documentation, and the fact that my hosting costs have more than doubled since I opened my account (it has been several years but come on, if anything my traffic is lower than it once was and I don’t think bandwidth and storage costs have gone up for this company) I decided I needed to make a change.
